Fruit Blast App

In today’s modern era of mobile technology, it is safe to say that Ipod has become the new standard for any portable MP3 player. This little device is packed with features to manage the music library, as well as any Wi-Fi enabled application. There is countless of apps out there to perform almost any task the user might require from his Ipod. I was contacted by Rob from MEDL Mobile to review their newest app which is currently selling for $0.99 at the iTunes Store. This would be my first App Review, so I said why not give it a try.

The application is called “Fruit Blast” and it certainly places itself under the “Gaming” category along with thousands of other apps out there today. This game is compatible with any Ipod Touch, iPhone and iPad and requires iOS 4.1 or later. It features engaging motion control and First-Person-Survival. This app is also rated 9+ for Infrequent/Mild Cartoon or Fantasy Violence.

When I first started Fruit Blast, it presented me with a quick and easy to follow calibration and option to choose if I am right or left handed. After setting all that, I was presented with a informative menu, which seemed like it could use a little bit of work (explained later).
Without too much hesitation, I clicked on PLAY and anticipated what the app was going to throw at me. As one could guess, it would be fruit, and the game literally throws it at my screen. The whole point of the game is to shoot off pieces of fruit thrown by an evil monkey. It may sound simple at first, but this monkey can get truly evil-ish on You.

A red cross-hair is presented and moved by “tilt-to-aim” accelerometer with fully adjustable sensitivity, the user must aim at the fruit being thrown and shoot it down using different unlock-able weapons. The game interface is simple and informative, the way I like it. On the right bottom screen are two buttons, one for FIRE! and other for reloading ammunition. Top right corner has “P” button for pause, the middle top portion of the screen shows the progress bar to the next lever, and on the left side are statistics regarding the “Seed” count, and the stage number. There are also indicators of special accessories one can acquire, such as squeegees for cleaning off the screen.

Cleaning off the screen from mangled up, squashed fruit that is. In case one misses the thrown fruit, it squashes all over the screen covering portions of it and limiting the visibility. This can get very difficult if no squeegees are available to wipe off the fruit after time. It is also worth to mention that every piece of fruit comes at You at different speeds which forces You to keep alert at all times.

I previously mentioned the “seeds” which act as the game’s currency to buy upgraded weapons and other accesories.. You get seeds for successful shots, however, one can also go and purchase extra seeds and other upgrades in form of packs in the iTunes store.

My reactions to Fruit Blast are positive, I knew right away that this is something to keep me occupied very well while perhaps trying to kill some time. Fruit Blast is a solid game, which will keep the user hooked for more than just a few times of playing due to its progression through stages. I would put it in the same category with games such as Bejeweled, which are sure to keep You entertained for a long time.
If there were any negatives to mention, I found playing on my Ipod Touch 3g that occasionally the frame rate would slow down when a lot of fruit was showing on my screen. This might not be the case with the newer and faster 4th gen. devices however. Also the menu seems like it was a bit rushed, it provides all the info, but seems like it’s not interactive enough. I would welcome some simple animation and perhaps some kind of response of the buttons when clicked.

Other than that, I can safely say that for 99 cents, You cannot go wrong with purchasing this app.
I give it 4/5 based on the fact that it kept me very well entertained, always trying to hit the next stage and the thought of upgrading weapons is pretty addicting on its own. If you wish to buy this app, You might do so here.
